CHAPTER FOURTEEN
THE FIFTH DAY: EVENING
When Huw Williams had gone Victory drove back to the hospital. He called in at Christina Legrangeâs office, but the press officer had already gone home. Majeke was still there, though, off shift but on call. Friday and Saturday evenings were Accident and Emergencyâs busiest sessions, and it was rare for one to pass by without half a dozen victims of drunken brawls presenting the kinds of injury that would benefit from the expertise of a plastic surgeon. Broken glass had always been the weapon of first choice in such improvised encounters.
âShall we get some dinner in the canteen?â Victory asked her. âItâs still earlyâthe rush wonât begin until the pubs begin to empty.â
âYou donât have to be here,â Majeke pointed out. âYou could eat somewhere nice. Why arenât you on your way back to your lovely farmhouse? I thought you didnât stay in town at weekends.â
âI might drop in on Mrs. Allison later. I was planning to go out to Oxfordshire tonight, but I was delayed at my consulting rooms and itâs beginning to seem that it might not be worth the bother, given that Iâm operating on Sunday. Iâll have to make the final preparations tomorrow, so Iâll have to be in Harley Street bright and early. As for the quality of the foodâwell, itâs only food.â
âOkay,â she said. âLetâs go.â
The food was, indeed, only foodâbut Victory had grown accustomed to eating on the run, fuelling up without paying any particular attention to aesthetic considerations.
âAny problems with my star patients?â he asked her, when they were seated.
âNone,â she said. âBoth making good progress, both ready for the final phases of their respective treatments. Thankfully, the two I took over yesterday are doing just as well. I wish I could claim the credit, but itâs all down to the cleverness of the machinery.â
âTake the credit,â Victory advised her. âIf and when anything does go wrong with the clever machinery, weâll certainly have to take the blameâat least until the happy day comes when AIs can be hauled into the dock at the Old Bailey to answer for their misdeeds. Have you talked to Mrs. Allison at all?â
âAre you kidding? To her, Iâm just one more skivvy. She might condescend to chat with you, but thereâs no one else in the hospital that measures up to her Olympian standards. Did you meet Gregory the Great this morning?â
âWe shook hands and chatted briefly,â Victory admitted. âI had to rush off, as usual. I regret it now; it might have been useful to have a more serious conversation with the great man, about his plans for Amahlâs future.â
âDoes he have any plans for Amahlâs future? I wouldnât put it past him to have arranged the boyâs treatment purely and simply to provide a shield to deflect press attention away from his wifeâs treatment. Is that too cynical, do you think?â
âYes it is,â Victory told her. âMrs. Allison could have booked in months ago if sheâd always planned to be here at the same time as Amahl.
